Tree Planting Programme for 1000 African Children

Volunteer West Africa has recently launched its first conservation education programme in Opeikuma village in Ghana's Central Region.
Volunteer West Africa has recently launched its first conservation education programme in Opeikuma village in Ghana's Central Region.

The Opeikuma area has suffered historically from over-logging. Unfortunately this has left the area - an area used primarily for subsistence farming - with little shelter from the elements and with a reduced nutritional level in the soil. The community therefore invited Volunteer West Africa to design and implement a sustainable education conservation programme that would help the younger generations appreciate the environmental importance of trees.

By working alongside the schools in the area, VWA staff and volunteers designed a series of workshops that taught the village children why trees are important, how to plant them, and how to look after them. Each workshop culminated with each child planting a sapling tree and building a protective cage and water irrigation system using only readily available and sustainable local materials.

With over 1000 Acacia trees sitting at the VWA nursery, it is hoped that every child in the Opeikuma area will have the opportunity, through this programme, to learn about the importance of trees and to plant a tree that they will then be responsible for caring for for years to come.
