Why Volunteering at the VWA Daycare Centre is a Better Option than Volunteering at an Orphanage!

Why Volunteering at the VWA Daycare Centre is a Better Option than Volunteering at an Orphanage!

As a member of the Better Volunteering, Better Care Network, VWA is committed to spreading the scientific research that demonstrates why children are better-off living with their families and not at orphanage facilities. And, thus, why volunteering at such orphanage facilities - however well intentioned - is sadly compounding and sustaining the many harms being done to children each and every year.

Decades of research shows that children's mental and emotional development is improved when they live as part of a family environment. Yet 80% of children living in orphanages around the world actually have at least one living parent: why is this?

Please take a moment to watch the following 3 minute video, produced by the Better Volunteering, Better Care network, which answers some of these questions and introduces you to some of the main difficulties and problems that orphanage related volunteering inflicts.

And, then, if you are still interested in giving up your time, energy and expertise as a volunteer, to help some of the world's most underprivileged and vulnerable children, get in touch with a member of our team...

At VWA Volunteer West Africa we fund and operate a 100% free Daycare & Nursery Centre for Vulnerable Children that provides education, healthcare, social support, and a nutritious feeding and clean water programme BUT that also supports these vulnerable children to return home each day to the safety of direct or extended family homes.

By providing for our student's needs for free, underprivileged families can rely on our centre to ensure that their child receives all of the basic care and support services they require, without the need to separate the child from the family. In addition, we extend our social support services to ensure that the families we work with can receive the social, educational and material support that they need to provide a safe and loving home for their children.

What does this mean for you as an international volunteer?

Well, through the VWA Volunteer West Africa Daycare & Nursery Centre you can work to support vulnerable children in a broad number of ways by participating in our extensive range of volunteer programmes and activities, to suit all skill sets and backgrounds. And you can do so safe in the knowledge that your kindness and good intentions will not unintentionally result in the mental and emotional suffering that orphanage volunteering placements often inflict on the very children they are their to support.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. We look forward to working with you to provide ethical volunteering placements for years to come!

The VWA Team.
