PWA Volunteer Ella helping at a creative education lession at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre

Interview with Partner West Africa Volunteer: Ella

Date Posted: 20/07/2016

Ella's been volunteering with PWA for 2 weeks, find out how she's been getting on...

Introducing the wonderful Ella! She's 2 weeks in to her 5 week placement, we've managed to prize her away from her work for 10 minutes to answer some quick questions about how she's getting on.

So Ella, tell us about your time here so far?

I feel like I've already done loads even though it's only been just under 2 weeks.  I've been working on the new nursery sponsorship scheme, written a nursery newsletter, helped in the nursery making lots of thank you and Christmas cards with two other volunteers and been out to see the local area which I've really enjoyed.

Sounds like you've been busy, what's been your highlight?

My highlight has probably been talking to the mothers of the children at the nursery. It really brought it home why PWA's work is so important. I've seen first-hand some of the troubles parents have in providing for their children but it's really positive to see how they continue to live and thrive under the circumstances. They continue to get on with life which I think is remarkable.

You've had 2 weeks living at the PWA guest house, how has that been?

It's really good, comfortable.  The food is nice and there's always people to talk to, everyone's really friendly. It's nice having the sounds of the nursery in the background while you're doing work and it's lovely to be able to go out and see the kids during the day too.

You've mentioned seeing the difficulties people live with here, how do you find life in Ghana compared to home?

It's very different, it can be quite sad when you compare the conditions people live in here with what we have at home, especially when you picture the nursery kids in their homes. There's so much we can learn though; I think they're rich in ways we aren't at home. Everyone I've met has been really friendly, no one's complaining, everyone just gets on with life with lots of singing and dancing along the way...it's different but I really like it.

You've still got another 3 weeks with us, what are you looking forward to in that time?

Taking a trip to Cape Coast will be good and just seeing a bit more of Ghana, I love that I'm learning new things every day. Of course I'm looking forward to spending more time with the kids in the nursery as well.

If you want to support Ella and the amazing work PWA does you can donate here or if hearing about Ella's first 2 weeks here with PWA has got you thinking about doing something similar, take a look at our current volunteer programmes to see how we can use your skills and talents to improve the lives of the vulnerable children we work with.
