Orphanage volunteering in Malawi, Africa: an article on the Volunteer West Africa Website

Unanticipated Outcomes of Voluntourism Among Malawi's Orphans

Date Posted: 19/01/2017

Another well-written academic paper exposing the ethical difficulties with the 'voluntourism' sector and its continued engagement in 'Orphanage Volunteering': 'Unanticipated Outcomes of Voluntourism Among Malawi's Orphans'.

As members of the ethical oversight board: 'Better Volunteering, Better Care' - the leading authority on the harms volunteering can do to children, particuarly orphans - Partner West Africa's volunteering department, 'Volunteer West Africa', does not engage in orphanage volunteering.

A useful read for those considering a volunteer placement at PWA's Daycare & Nursery Centre - a project specifically designed to ensure that the vulnerable children we care for return home to a safe and loving home each night - as compared with many mainstream or commercial orphanage volunteering projects that sadly continue to ignore best-practice ethical approaches by allowing volunteers to build relationships, with already vulnerable children, which will come to an end when that voluneer returns home, again reinforcing the child's sense of abandonment.

Another good reason to volunteer responsibly: 'Volunteer West Africa'!
