Lucy Returns to Ghana

Date Posted: 27/02/2017

Lucy returns to volunteer with Partner West Africa on the International Schools Partnership Programme. Read an interview with her about what she's been up to and what she's got planned for the next 3 months.

Akwaaba, Welcome back Lucy. Its been a while since you were last with us, what have you been up to since you left in December?

"A few days after I got home, I visited Singlewell Primary School, in Kent. This is the partner school of Childcraft [a school Partner West Africa work with here in Ghana]. I went to deliver the project work that I had helped the Childcraft students with while I was in Ghana, and did a school assembly to tell the UK students more about life in Ghana. Other than that I’ve just been reuniting with family and friends and complaining about how cold England is! The 3 months at home flew by so quickly."

Your 3 months in Ghana flew by as well, what did you miss about your time in Ghana?

"The routine; getting up early, going to bed early and living a more simple/grounded life. I missed seeing the children [at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre] every day and being called “Auntie Lucy”! And I missed the food, of course."

What are your plans for the next 3 months?

"I have got a lot of project work from the partner schools that i visited in England over Christmas and New Year which I am looking forward to delivering to the schools here in Ghana [as part of PWA's International Schools Partnership Programme]. I’ll also get some new projects from the Ghanaian schools to take back to the schools in England. Hopefully I can do some more music with the children at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre too!"

Sounds like you're going to be busy, what are you looking forward to the most?

"Probably the rewarding feeling when you get a piece of work done with the schools, or have a great lesson with the children. Being able to think of a project idea, plan everything, carry it out, and see the results at the end is a great feeling. I’m also looking forward to getting back into the habit of reading! Something I do here and not really at home due to the temptation of the TV. And obviously I can’t wait to eat my favourite Ghanaian dish ‘yam & garden egg stew’."

Lucy is volunteering with Partner West Africa on the International Schools Partnership Programme, she is on her gap year before going to University in the UK to study music.
