Orphanage Volunteering Does More Harm Than Good

Date Posted: 08/03/2017

Volunteering in orphanages is increasingly seen as something to be avoided, and with good reason. ‘The Telegraph’ writes an interesting piece drawing on opinions for several influential individuals about the risks associated with children being placed in residential care homes (orphanages).

Partner West Africa’s flagship project is the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre which offers critical support to families who are struggling to care for their children. We provide children with pre-school education, health insurance, daily health care as needed, immunisations on admission, a nutritious feeding programme and safe drinking water as well as school uniform and additional clothes and shoes as needed. Crucially this support is given in conjunction with the family’s support, the children return home to their parents or carers at the end of each school day keeping the family unit intact and allowing children the vital individual care lacking in residential care homes.
