Oral Health Workshops

Date Posted: 09/08/2017

In July 2017 Partner West Africa carried out a series of oral health workshops with children attending 2 of our partner schools, read on to see what happened.

In July 2017 Partner West Africa (PWA) carried out a series of oral health workshops over a two-week period in two of their partner schools. During the first week, three workshops were run at House of Grace (HoG) school which is a specialist school which caters for hearing impaired and deaf children. A total of 66 children, aged between 7-24 years, participated in the oral health workshop.

The following week the workshop took place in St. Peters School, located in Opeikuma, a rural village in the central region of Ghana. A single workshop was carried out with 89 of the youngest children aged between 3 and 7 years.

The workshops in both schools consisted of information based on different areas of oral health, including the tooth anatomy, foods that are good and bad for the teeth and why it’s important to look after your teeth, followed by a practical tooth brushing demonstration by the children and PWA volunteers. The depth of information included in the workshops reflected the children’s educational level, for example more detailed explanation of certain aspects of tooth anatomy and the reasons for brushing a certain way was provided for older children, whereas more simple information was provided for the youngest children. The children had the opportunity to ask questions throughout which enabled the workshops to be further tailored to their needs. The final element of the workshop was a practical tooth brushing activity where all the children were given a tooth brush and toothpaste and got to brush their teeth together: it was very messy with everyone spitting their toothpaste everywhere, but it definitely provided a lot of laughs for the children, volunteers and teachers.

As a volunteer delivering the workshops, what I loved most was how enthusiastic ALL the children were to learn, and how well behaved they were in both schools. It was an amazing feeling to see the toothbrushes and toothpaste myself and the other volunteers had donated go to a good home. The huge smile on the children’s faces when they were each given a tooth brush and toothpaste to take home with them is something I will never forget.
