Abbey Mulla has raised in excess of £2000 for Partner West Africa over the last couple of years, in June 2017 he achieved his goal of running 7 half marathons on 7 consecutive days. Read on to hear about his journey.

PWA: Tell us a little about yourself Abbey.

Abbey: In 2009 I was about to turn 40, I was obese (16 and half stone) and a 20 a day smoker. In the space of 12 months I quit smoking and lost 4 and half stone in weight through taking up regular exercise and adopting a heathier diet and since then my life has completely changed.

I’ve decided to do this challenge for a few reasons,

  • To raise money for Partner West Africa, where one of the employees from the charity that I manage is currently volunteering;
  • To kick start my own health improvement, although I’ve been very active the last few years, over the last 12 months I got a bit lazy and put on a few pounds. I felt taking up a challenge like this would get me back on track;
  • I want to show people that you can achieve anything you put your mind, as long as you are committed and motivated.

PWA: what training have you done for your challenge?

Abbey: I started my preparations on the 4th of Jan 2017, this included a strict diet and a tough training regime. When I start my challenge, I will have:

  • Spent 135 days in preparation;
  • Done 99 individual runs;
  • Ran a total of 618 miles;
  • Lost 30llbs (2 stone 2llbs) in weight.

Last year I did for half marathons in 4 consecutive weekends for Partner West Africa and I have also been involved in many endurance / obstacle course challenges like Total Warrior and Tough Mudder.

PWA: How did you feel once you completed the last run?

Abbey: My challenge was originally going to start on the 20th May but due to a knee injury I got on the first run I had to stop, I was very upset. I saw a physio who couldn’t find anything wrong so after a short rest I started running again, short distances at first and then gradually increased the distance till I felt confident again. On the 10th of June I started my 2nd attempt at the challenge and was relieved to have finished the first run with no pain in the knee. As the days went on I felt more and more comfortable and confident knowing that my knee and my fitness would see me through. On my 7th and last run I decided to push myself and to my delight achieved a personal best of 1:57:06! I’m glad I have been part of raising money to help such an amazing charity.
