How to be a Socially Concious Traveller

Date Posted: 06/09/2017

An interesting article about socially conscious travelling (and volunteering) from the Washington Post.

An interesting article about socially conscious travelling (and volunteering) from the Washington Post. It argues that volunteering and travelling don’t always mix which can often be true, however when you volunteer with Partner West Africa, a small 100% not for profit NGO, we put the work front and centre, it’s the primary reason for our volunteer’s presence. We employ local staff and our volunteers are invited to pass on knowledge rather than take the work away from a local person. For example, we don’t have volunteers teaching regularly in the Daycare and Nursery Centre, instead they run one-off or short duration special activities which show our local staff practically how new ideas can be delivered and gives them the skills and confidence to implement it long after the volunteer has left. The teachers gain new ideas and techniques, the children have a familiar, dependable person teaching them each day, and the volunteers pass on their knowledge as well as learning a thing or two from our staff as well.

We have a careful application process to ensure we invite the people who want to volunteer for the benefit of the staff and vulnerable children, families and communities we support, however the weekend is your own and we encourage you to get out and explore the beautiful country that we call home in an ethical and mindful way.

In the village of Kokrobite, on the south coast of Ghana, where we are based, there are plenty of locally owned bars and restaurants, fisherwomen who sell their fresh catch of the day on the beach and local traders selling paintings, carvings, hand-made jewellery and made to measure clothes, everything you need to be a socially concious traveller. You could even explore further afield and travel to the historic town of Cape Coast or the beautiful waterfalls in Volta, all staying in local hotels and guesthouses, hiring local tour guides and sampling local food.

Find out more about the projects and programmes we offer and how you can use your skills, knowledge and expertise to volunteer here in Ghana.
