A Woman's Place Is... PWA Gender Blog #3

Follow this blog as we explore where a women’s place is in a post #metoo Ghanaian society.

A Woman's Place Is... At The Table

Across the world women are often underrepresented in decision making, whether politically (22.8% of all national parliamentarians) or in business (4.8% of CEOs in the FTSE 500). So, how can the world become a better and safer place for women, when those who understand the problems they face aren’t sat at the table to represent? As the team embarks on the first phase of the PWA Gender Research Project, this has been at the forefront of their minds.

To truly understand the issues women and girls are facing in Ga South Municipal District the team have invited everyone to the table. They have brushed off their walking shoes and hit the streets. By interviewing over 200 community members on their attitudes towards men and women’s education, health and relationships the team are exploring how views vary within and across communities. However, it’s not just gender, every part of society has been included: from fishermen to leaders to nurses to school girls to school boys to elders - ultimately helping us to understand why gender inequality is prevalent in these communities and how this is impacting lives.

Every community member plays a part in changing our society, which is why we are making sure that women in our community have their place at the table.
