A Single Story

Anyone who spends time travelling or volunteering will have stories to tell. In this TED Talk, author Chimamanda Adichie talks about the dangers of a single, one sided story and her personal experiences of this.

For us as volunteers, one of the ethical responsibilities that comes with travel is not to tell the single story. We should convey the alternate stories to the common poverty porn that screams aloud from the screens of the global north; tell the quieter story, the story that doesn't make the headlines. Our stories should down-play the stereotypes, challenge misconceptions and not perpetuate the myth that all Africans are poor and need to be saved by a kind, white person. We need to turn that narrow, single story into a rich plethora of stories, showing the multifaceted intricate beauty of the African continent.

One of the best ways to learn about something is to experience it yourself, Partner West Africa accept skilled volunteers in many disciplines allowing you to see, feel and really experience Ghana for yourself, enabling you to help tell some of the many stories that don’t get the airtime they deserve. Take a look at our programme areas and contact us to find out more.
