Partner West Africa are pleased to announce our newest partner: the Ghana Girl Guides Association (GGGA). As part of our research into organisations working in the area of gender we visited the GGGA to find out more about them and how they are working with girls and young women in our area. Their mission is to enable girls and young women develop their full potential as responsible citizens of the world through innovative non-formal education programmes, leadership development, advocacy work and community action, which empowers girls and young women to develop the skills and confidence needed to make positive changes in their lives, their communities, country and the world.

As part of our partnership we attended an event run by two Guide units based in our home village of Kokrobite. The workshop about menstrual hygiene was a great opportunity for us to see them in action and the amazing work they’re doing with local girls. While teaching about menstruation, hygiene and sanitation they composed a catchy song to keep their advice in everyone’s minds. Watch the video of it below, but beware you’ll be humming it for days!

Following the menstrual hygiene workshop the impact of the menstrual cycle on girl’s school attendance was brought to light: if girls aren’t prepared or don’t have access to items such as sanitary pads at school they have no choice but to go home. In response, we have developed a project to pilot in 2 local schools that aims to tackle this.

The Emergency Period Pack (EPP) project will provide items, including sanitary pads, toilet roll and hand sanitiser, that girls might need if they start their period whilst at school and do not have these items with them.

Today we met Girl Guide leaders and teachers representing the 2 schools to finalise the project, allowing us to start planning workshops and training and approaching other partners who can supply items we might need. We’re looking forward to working with the Ghana Girl Guides on many future projects.
