Volunteer West Africa Fun Day for Local Children

Date Posted: 20/01/2014
Volunteer West Africa opened its doors for a charitable young children's day of fun and games this weekend.

Volunteer West Africa opened its doors for a charitable young children's day of fun and games this weekend. An open invitation was sent to all families with young children within the local community, and to the children who had attended VWA's health and hygiene workshops over the previous few days (many of whom, we think, suspected the event a ploy to allow VWA health workers to jab them with immunization needles again!). Luckily, though, turn-out was high and approximately 200 families/children descended on the VWA compound in Kokrobite on Saturday.

The VWA team and volunteers arranged games, dance, music, and general entertainment during the day and a healthy and free meal of fresh local fish, jollof rice, vegetables, fruit juice and clean drinking water was provided to all who attended.

Volunteer West Africa also used the event to distribute around 600 items of children's clothes and accessories, that had been donated by our supporters in the UK, and to continue to convey and promote the the VWA values of health and education at the community level.

The event formed part of VWA's commitment to offer support to the local community in which it and its international volunteers are based. A great day was had by all to the extent that 'Big Chris', our friendly resident security guard, and the equally impressive Mama Felicia, had to enforce a 'closing time' to encourage straddling families and children to depart at the day's end.

VWA would like to thank everyone who helped organize and deliver the event as well as its sister organization in the UK, Partner West Africa, for supplying the donated clothes and toys. We look forward to many more!
