As part of our ongoing commitment to meet industry best practice standards, Volunteer West Africa today launched a 4 week project review to ensure our volunteer projects are in-line with published International Ecotourism Society Guidelines.

The review will be conducted by Inusah Amidu, VWA Project Manager, and Chillie Amuzu, VWA Volunteer Coordinator, and will look at the aims & objectives of our current and proposed development projects alongside the need for our international volunteers to engage in those projects effectively and in a sustainable manner.

Unlike 'voluntourism' organisations, VWA is a fully operational NGO which designs, funds and manages its own projects in-full. We then - following a review of the individual's skills and expertise - might accept international volunteers to join us in Africa and help deliver those projects. It is therefore critical for both the communities that we serve and the volunteers that we accept that we are held to the highest possible ethical standards.

Once the review is conducted and findings or improvements identified, we will feed any required changes in to our project planning systems and the volunteer programmes that we list on our website.

The guidelines can be viewed at:
