Appeal for Volunteers & Sponsors to Help Create a Children's Nursery in Ghana

Date Posted: 18/06/2014
Volunteer West Africa is appealing for supporters and volunteers who can help us take our charitable children's nursery project in Ghana to the next stage.

From August this year, VWA will begin planning the development of a dedicated nursery and daycare facility to be located within the Oshieye community. We hope to fund, plan and deliver a facility that will provide shelter and care for hundreds of the most vulnerable, young, local children.

Towards the end of 2013, around 30 children from Oshieye - a small fishing village in Greater Accra, Ghana - were in attendance at a free nursery and daycare facility managed by a local lady, Mama Felicia. As many parents and families in Oshieye live below the poverty line, Mama Felecia offered the nursery free-of-charge to ensure that as many children as possible received some sort of access to basic care and education. There were no other educational daycare facilities available in Oshieye.

The premises in which Mama Felicia had to host the nursery unfortunately was not sufficient to provide for the basic needs of the children: there was no running water, no toilet facilities, no food preparation facilities, no first aid equipment or medical facilities, no clean drinking water, no fencing or boundaries to keep the children safe, and the building itself was a dilapidated concrete block structure with no floors and no water-tight roofing. Conditions were damp, dusty and difficult.

As part of its commitment to support vulnerable children across West Africa, Volunteer West Africa stepped in in late 2013 and offered to host the children's nursery within the VWA compound in Oshieye. Although the VWA compound had not been designed for this purpose, the space did offer a clean, safe and well resourced facility in which the children could prosper. Parents and community leaders were consulted and the nursery quickly re-established itself under Volunteer West Africa's duty of care. The children who attend the nursery now have access to clean drinking and bathing water, a nutritious and hygienically prepared daily meal, good toilet facilities, hand washing/hygiene stations, first aid and fire safety equipment, and access to VWA's volunteers, staff and learning resources.

The children who have been attending the facility for some time are now showing real improvements in health, concentration and confidence. Although they represent some of the poorest and most vulnerable children in the region, everyone agrees they are an absolute delight to be around: they bring real light and joy to the VWA compound each day.

However, VWA is now appealing for supporters and volunteers who can help us take this project to the next stage. From August this year, VWA will begin planning the development of a dedicated nursery and daycare facility to be located within the Oshieye community itself. We hope to fund, plan and deliver a facility that will provide shelter and care for hundreds of the most vulnerable, young, local children. To do this, we need volunteers with building planning and fund raising expertise. Can you create promotional videos or materials and help us reach a large audience? We need donors and supporters who can contribute money, time or materials to the project. And we need individuals and families who will commit to sponsoring a child to attend the facility once it is up and running. We have an awful lot of work to do and we need your help!
