Internship Vacancy at VWA: NGO Development & Volunteering

Date Posted: 03/08/2014
Volunteer West Africa is proud to announce an internship opportunity entitled 'Organisational/NGO Development and the Coordination of International Volunteers'.

Vacancy Type: Paid Internship

Duration: 12 to 24 Months

Location: Kokrobite, Greater Accra, Ghana

Title: 'Organisational/NGO Development and the Coordination of International Volunteers'

Volunteer West Africa is a Ghana registered NGO with a focus on improving living standards and access to education for vulnerable Ghanaian children. We deliver a range of programmes in education, health, sanitation, community development, and the rights of the child. As part of our approach, we invite members of the international community to participate in our projects and programmes as volunteers.

To help us achieve our objectives, we are now offering a paid internship to a candidate with an interest in organisational development within the international development sector. This internship combines policy - the initial design and implementation of VWA's organisational and administrative processes and approaches - with practice - the day-to-day coordination and management of current VWA volunteers and projects.

Working under our Project Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, the successful candidate will assist VWA to:

Design, publish and review its in-house policies, documents, procedures and systems;

Transfer current, best-practice development approaches, in particular ethical approaches to development, in to effective operational practice;

Identify and capture opportunities to research, promote and discuss international volunteering across appropriate international media and forums;

Select, recruit and prepare international volunteers for their volunteer placements;

Coordinate and manage volunteers during their volunteer placements;

Administer, review and improve VWA's volunteer services and support structures;

Design, plan, implement and review VWA's volunteer projects and programmes.

This role requires excellent organisational and people management skills and would suit an approachable, people-orientated candidate with an interest in converting development policy in to active, operational process. Candidates must have the ability to work effectively in the West African context and to deal effectively with the challenges associated with operational-field work.

The internship encompasses responsibilities across a number of professional disciplines: human resources, health and safety management, project management, marketing/promotion/fund raising, and organisational administration, and therefore it offers a fantastic opportunity to gain broad, entry-level experience in the international development/NGO sector.

All candidates MUST:

Hold a relevant postgraduate degree;

Be able to demonstrate an excellent understanding of international development approaches, ethics & policy;

Be able to prepare and publish high quality reports, documents, procedures and articles;

Be able to communicate and engage effectively with adults, young adults and children from a range of different cultures & backgrounds;

Be approachable and able to build strong and effective relationships quickly;

Be able to remain calm, patient and flexible in a dynamic and challenging environment;

Demonstrate impeccable organisation skills and attention to detail;

Be fully ITC literate with a good working knowledge of web-platforms and social media;

Hold a full driving license and international driving permit;

Be comfortable living and working closely with a small team of permanent staff and volunteers;

Be able to provide a Criminal Background Check which demonstrates they have no past criminal convictions or current proceedings which would prevent them from working with children or vulnerable adults.

As an intern, the successful candidate will receive a basic living allowance in-line with local salary levels, reimbursement of work-related expenses, and full board and accommodation at the VWA volunteer and staff guest house. Work hours are full-time, including some evenings and weekends.

If you are able to meet all of the requirements above, you can apply for the position via email to Mr. Matt Craig at info@volunteerwestafrica.org. Please include a covering letter and comprehensive CV in PDF format.

Please note: due to the high level of expected applications, we are only able to respond to those candidates who will be invited to the next stage of recruitment. If you have not received an email response from us within 10 days of your submission, your application has unfortunately been unsuccessful
