Health Event at the VWA Children's Daycare & Nursery Centre

Health Event at the VWA Children's Daycare & Nursery Centre

Date Posted: 22/10/2014
Another health event completed at the Volunteer West Africa Children's Nursery!

On Friday 17th October, Volunteer West Africa funded and organised the latest in a series of health events held at our daycare and nursery centre for vulnerable children in Oshieye, Ghana. During the event, 70 children, along with VWA staff and teachers, received full health screening and support from health professionals.

These events are held quarterly and organised in collaboration with the community health unit of the Ghana Health Service. Volunteer West Africa has made it a regular program to ensure the children who attend the VWA centre remain healthy and/or have any health concerns identified and dealt with appropriately and quickly. Importantly, the events also help to prevent the spread of contagious diseases such as cholera (Ghana is currently suffering a cholera outbreak and West Africa is suffering an unprecedented Ebola outbreak) that are common in close-knit communities such as Oshieye.

The children who attend the VWA nursery all live in the Oshiyie community. The physical environment, sanitation standards, and the food and hygiene approaches can represent a serious risk at times to the children. While VWA cannot prevent the children from being exposed to health risks, we certainly can ensure we do everything possible to reduce those risks and rectify any health problems.

All children who attend the VWA centre have their health insurance and health care needs met and paid for in-full by VWA.

Outcomes of the event:

  • During the screening six children were diagnosed with skin disorders and received immediate care and treatment.
  • Two children were diagnosed with eye problems; one of which is severe and will require surgery which VWA will organise.
  • Four of the children are suffering from hearing impairment, which VWA will respond to following the advice received after the children have seen an ENT specialist.
  • All the children, staff and teachers were dewormed.
  • The nurses also checked the children's personal hygiene, finger nails and general appearance and made improvements were required.
  • Finally, tremendous improvements were noted in the health of several children who had been identified with health concerns at previous VWA health events.

As always, thank you to all our sponsors and supporters. 70 children and families are healthier and stronger today because of your generous support.
