Be a Volunteer, not a Voluntourist

Be a Volunteer, not a Voluntourist

Date Posted: 03/03/2015
As summer approaches, thousands of well meaning individuals from across the world will be considering how to combine their holiday or travel this year with the chance to 'give a little something back' by trying to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. But how many will become voluntourists?
As summer approaches, thousands of well meaning individuals will be considering how to combine their holiday or travel this year with the chance to 'give a little something back' and help those who are less fortunate than themselves.

Hundreds of organisations now offer travellers and tourists access to a myriad of exciting and apparently altruistic projects from across the globe. From working at an orphanage in Uganda, to saving sea turtles in St Kitts, to teaching English language in China, the options are endless and making an informed decision is very difficult. How can you be sure that the organisation you sign up to is not simply looking to profit from your kindness? How can you be sure that the project you are joining has not been designed and manufactured primarily to attract and secure volunteers instead of to genuinely address the needs of the local community? To learn more about these issues take a look at the following Aljazeera America article.

With Volunteer West Africa you can be confident you are making a responsible and ethical choice. VWA is a 100% not-for-profit, volunteer-led charity which takes a lead in the debate surrounding the potential harm being caused worldwide by the voluntourism' sector. Our team consists of qualified and experienced international development professionals who work year round to deliver sustainable and ethical education, healthcare and community development interventions to children and families across West Africa. We are a fully certified and registered NGO working in partnership with government, international charity organisations, and some of the world's leading INGOs and aid agencies. Through our permeant presence living and working within the communities we serve we experience first-hand the damage that is done by voluntourism organisations who place poorly supported and ill-prepared individuals in to mis-managed and ineffective projects. For us, the voluntourism sector often represents a tangible and frustrating roadblock to real development.

As a result we have designed our volunteering and work experience opportunities with a difference: If you volunteer with VWA you are integrated into our team to work in a role and project that has clear development objectives and outcomes that can be clearly monitored and assessed. You are expected, like us, to hold the needs of the children and families we support in the highest regard. At VWA, you are a volunteer, not a voluntourist.

If you would like to learn more about our volunteering and internship opportunities please contact a member of our team at info@volunteerwestafrica.org and if you would like independent industry advice regarding how to choose a valuable and ethical volunteering organisation please visit the website of The International Ecotourism Society.
