Volunteer West Africa (VWA) held the first in a series of free public health screening events, on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of March, in the rural community of Tuba, around 20km West of Accra, Ghana?s capital city.

VWA, working in official collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, supplied a team of 15 local staff and international volunteers. The team comprised Nurses, a Doctor, a Lab Technician and a Nutritionist, as well as administrative staff to assist with the processing and registration duties.

Around 250 men, women and children attended over the course of the two day event with all receiving a free health assessment, testing and screening - including for full testing for common local health concerns such as diabetes, malaria and high blood pressure.
As well as providing access to healthcare which might otherwise be out of reach to many in this community, the event served to highlight the importance of identifying and treating potential health issues as early as possible. Advice was given regarding prevention and treatment with even a VWA Nutritionist on-hand to offer guidance on a balanced diet for children and families and on how to achieve good health through small lifestyle changes.

One VWA team member stated ?the turnout was amazing, its overwhelming to see people show up to receive medical attention and seek advice when otherwise they might remain silent?

This event marked the first in a month-long series of health events being delivered by VWA across a range of communities in the Ga South Municipal region of Ghana. VWA is hopeful that the success of these events will help secure further funding to continue and expand this program in future.

VWA Executive Director Matt Craig would like to pay a huge thank you to his team: Inusa Amindu (Project Manager), Mrs Comfort (Physician Assistant), Tyler Jernigen (Volunteer), Sophie Ashmore (Volunteer) and the nurses and lab technicians of the Kokrobite Health Clinic, Nana Ama, Vivianne Konodu, Sarah, Naomi, Hindu, Grace and Michael - as well as to the Chief of Tuba and other key community leaders for hosting and helping to organise the event.
