On Tuesday this week the VWA team of staff & volunteers re-visited The House of Grace School for deaf and hearing impaired children, after our initial meeting on the 5th of June.

A team of two VWA volunteers and two staff members held a meeting with HoG's current head mistress, Ona, who spoke of the needs of the students and how VWA can assist them under the exciting new partnership being formed between HoG and VWA. Some of these needs included ongoing support over the school holidays. Four weeks can be a long time for the children to be in an environment where they are unable to communicate with anyone as most of the family members do not know sign language. It also keeps the children from being forced to work petty jobs or physical chores as this can be dangerous and put the deaf children in a vulnerable situation. A school holiday programme was suggested where VWA volunteers could hold themed days involved around sports, arts & crafts, beach days etc to keep the children active and involved. To that effect, we actually today had a test run by delivering an arts and crafts event with the HoG students... check out the pics below! Amazing and uplifting times had by all!

More discussion went towards VWA advertising for volunteers who would be well suited to work in conjunction with HoG as well as VWA. For example students currently studying towards teaching and working with the hearing impaired or children with learning difficulties would be highly beneficial to this project.

This partnership will be formalised after a Memorandum of Understanding has been agreed by VWA and HoG insuring both parties are comfortable and happy with the role in which they will partake under the new partnership. Going forward VWA hopes to form many partnerships and reach as many disabled or disadvantaged children as possible in this region to ensure they have access to appropriate education, healthcare and social support? as well as creating amazing opportunities and experiences for volunteers and the children to have some great fun together!
