I was at Partner West Africa for 3 weeks using the compound as a base to conduct my research for my masters dissertation. Prior to arrival, I was more than happy with the level of support received and had a good and clear idea of what I would be doing. On my first days, I had the necessary orientation required which included health and safety brief, a tour of Kokrobite and other local places of interest. Seeing as I had previously spent 5 months in Ghana in 2016, I was already aware of most of the cultural information.

My work here was separate from the PWA programmes as I was conducting my own research. Chillie [PWA Project Manager] provided me with a lot of support at the start to familiarise myself with the area and the places I would be going to (pharmacies and clinics). Any information I needed was provided to me by PWA staff and I felt that if I needed anything I only had to ask.

One of the best things about being here was the level of freedom I was given. Having previously worked for charities in Ghana, the lack of freedom we experienced there was an issue for many people including myself and led to much frustration. Here however, I was able to explore the local area, go out on day / weekend trips and spend time at the beach drinking incredible cheap gin without having to be accompanied by a member of staff! Another positive was Naa’s cooking. This is probably what I am going to miss most as dinner times were the highlight of the day.

I didn’t work directly on PWA projects however, as living conditions go, the support from staff and general day-to-day life, I can’t fault it here. Support was given whenever needed and at no point did I feel unsafe and want to go home.  For the purposes of coming to PWA to conduct research I would highly recommend.

Also, make sure you buy Kasempa gin, and Beetay the dog isn’t as bad as he first seems #sorrybeetay
