Programme Completed: Children's Health, Hygiene & Nutrition

Date Posted: 30/10/2018

I took the incredible opportunity to volunteer with Partner West Africa for 12 weeks with the Children’s Health, Hygiene, and Nutrition programme. Although my placement was longer than most volunteer’s, I still wish I had more time in Ghana.

I took the incredible opportunity to volunteer with Partner West Africa (PWA) for 12 weeks with the Children’s Health, Hygiene, and Nutrition programme. Although my placement was longer than most volunteer’s, I still wish I had more time in Ghana. Most of the work I did was with food and nutrition, but I also was involved in some of the Gender and Malaria Prevention programme projects. PWA was flexible with tailoring my work to my interests, and was clear in the first few days of my placement what I would be doing.

I started my work with learning about all the different foods in Ghana from some cooks at a local school. Ghanaians are eager to teach others about their country, and are very helpful and friendly. I also worked with these cooks to improve the nutrition quality of their school menu. My next project was developing the PWA nursery menu for the reopening. I used specific measurements and nutritional analysis to ensure the meals were the best possible for the children. Plans often change with PWA and with the partnerships in Ghana, and this project did change so I adapted the menu proposal to be distributed to other schools instead. My work also involved a lot of education delivery. Along with a couple volunteers, I taught menstrual health workshops, malaria prevention workshops, a recipe book project, and a hobby project to school children. During my last week I was also involved in organising community malaria screening to be completed after my placement.

All the projects were great learning experiences for me, and hopefully for the community as well. I developed my professional skills and was able to experience working in a completely new environment. The work was balanced well with social activities and opportunities to explore Ghana which I did at the weekends and after work. I was pleased with the work I completed, but was also pleasantly surprised with how much fun and involved I was in Ghanaian culture on the weekends and weeknights. I made close friends with Ghanaians, and weekends were always exciting with trying new bars, experiencing new festivals, seeing new places, and constantly meeting new friends. I highly recommend coming to Ghana and volunteering with PWA. In my opinion, the longer the placement, the better. Three months was a good amount of time, but I also feel like I could stay another few weeks. I recommend getting as involved with the community as possible. Do not be afraid to gain new experiences and meet lots of people. The only way to grow professionally and personally is to step out of your comfort zone.
