I have enjoyed my time in Ghana immensely, five weeks feels far too short as my time here has flown by. It is a place which is bursting with life, bright colours and loud music. Coming from rural Scotland, the vibrant culture takes a little while to get used to, but I soon settled in after a few days!

I have enjoyed my time in Ghana immensely, five weeks feels far too short as my time here has flown by. It is a place which is bursting with life, bright colours and loud music. Coming from rural Scotland, the vibrant culture takes a little while to get used to, but I soon settled in after a few days!

The staff at Partner West Africa (PWA) were great at explaining the normal way of life and small things that were hard to remember to start with, such as only exchanging money with your right hand, now feel like second nature. On the first week, we were given an induction on what to expect, and had the opportunity to observe and take part in some of the other programs such as nutrition and women’s health.

During our second week we began to draw up plans for setting up the malaria clinic by corresponding with the local health services as well as prepping for the malaria workshops that were to take place in local schools. It was daunting at first to deliver my first educational workshop (ever!) but we all soon got into the swing of things and began to enjoy it – helped by the fantastic students who were always happy to see us!

The differences in UK and Ghanaian culture proved clear when trying to work in partnership with the health clinic, however I learned a lot about events organisation and the problems that accompany it when Wi-Fi and instant communication is not readily available. Due to unforeseen circumstances we were unfortunately unable to run the free clinic, but luckily got to assist in outlining the rough plans for how it will work as well as acquiring all necessary items.

We managed to go on two weekend trips to Cape Coast and Koforidua, which were both beautiful and interesting in their own way. It also felt good to have the independence to travel alone after having been apprehensive of how to even get to the shopping centre a few miles from the PWA compound! However, even staying in Kokrobite for weekend can still be entertaining with reggae nights, beach bars and good coffee.

I am sad to be returning to normal life, knowing that I will not be smiled at and greeted by every passing stranger, however I will definitely not be forgetting my experience anytime soon!
