Volunteers share a meal after a hard day working on volunteer projects

The 9 weeks I spent volunteering for Partner West Africa has been an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. Although I was a little apprehensive about volunteering in a country that was very alien to me, Ghana and PWA as a volunteer organisation did not disappoint me. As soon I arrived in Ghana I fell in love with the place, people, weather and especially the food. The majority of Ghanaian people are extremely welcoming and friendly which really helped to make me feel at home. Although there are a few cultural differences between Ghanaians and myself, they are some of the nicest people I have ever met.

"The 9 weeks I spent volunteering for Partner West Africa (PWA) has been an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

The PWA team were extremely welcoming and ensured I had everything I needed during my time in Ghana. As I had never volunteered before I was unsure exactly what my work would involve. I was very pleased to discover that after my weekend of settling in I had valuable and worthwhile work for me to get stuck into straight away. The first task I had was to plan with other PWA members a workshop based on a balanced diet which would be delivered to a nearby school and community. Having recently finished studying a degree in public health and nutrition I was able to put my knowledge to good use.

PWA ensured that my work was very varied during my weeks spent there, which suited me perfectly. It mainly involved planning and researching for the delivery of nutritional workshops, visiting the local markets to thoroughly understand the Ghanaian foods, preparing and cooking the food and finally forming a template to help assess and monitor the children's health who attended the daycare and nursery which is held at the PWA compound. One thing that I found especially refreshing was the eagerness of the Ghanaian children to learn as much as possible.

Work aside, PWA also gave me the opportunity to travel and see different parts of Ghana with the help of the volunteer co-ordinator. I visited the Volta region, Cape Coast and Kumasi, all the trips were very different and enabled me to learn more about the history and different cultures across Ghana.

The staff at PWA made my stay in Ghana very enjoyable and ensured that I felt safe at all times. If there was ever anything I needed or if I had concerns they would always be happy to help. Although I loved Ghana and the Ghanaian people, some aspects of their culture was hard to understand as it was extremely different from the UK. I often felt that they were being aggressive but I soon understood that they were not and that was just how they communicate with one and another. As previously mentioned I absolutely loved the food and embraced getting stuck in and eating with my hands, even if it did get a little messy from time to time! I also loved seeing the different types of cultural dances across Ghana and understanding as much as I could about their culture.

The whole experience has improved me as a person and has taught me to understand and adapt easily to different cultures and ways of life. I have also learnt to be patient when things don't always go as plan or go exactly in the way I imagined, as it always worked out for the best in the end. After seeing people who have very little but who still appreciate anything that they do have, I really appreciate everything I do have and do not take things for granted. I would always enjoy all the communities cooking, playing board games and having fun with one another on the street. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Ghana and volunteering with Partner West Africa. It was an unforgettable experience which has given me memories that I will never forgot. Thank you PWA!"
