Having visited The Gambia annually for the last four years as part of my work for another charity, I was extremely excited for my stay in Ghana with Partner West Africa (PWA). I had an idea of what was in store for me over the six weeks I was with PWA for, but of course I was eager to see how it compared with previous trips a bit further up the coast of West Africa. The result was that it far exceeded any expectations I had. Morally and ethically, I think PWA stand out from other organisations as a charity that potential volunteers should seriously consider. There are a lot of choices for those looking to volunteer in places like Ghana, but I did not find any as good as PWA at really helping those in need in Ghana.

"Having visited The Gambia annually for the last four years as part of my work for another charity, I was extremely excited for my stay in Ghana with Partner West Africa (PWA). I had an idea of what was in store for me over the six weeks I was with PWA for, but of course I was eager to see how it compared with previous trips a bit further up the coast of West Africa.

The result was that it far exceeded any expectations I had. My main concern was where the money I was spending was going to end up. I knew about the negatives of commercial volunteering trips and I was intent on a trip that would genuinely benefit the people of Ghana, not the bank accounts of British tour operators. It was a great relief when I found PWA's website and learnt how the money volunteers spend is used for great purposes. From my point of view, the set-up PWA have should be exactly what any budding volunteer looks for in a volunteering organisation.

From arrival into the hot and stuffy Accra airport (quite different from Heathrow at 5am in March), I felt very comfortable with being in Ghana and with PWA. From the comfort of  PWA's 'Lilly the Land Rover' - coated in PWA's logo - to the friendly nature of every member of PWA staff, everything made you feel at home. Having experienced a wide range of African accommodation on previous trips, I can also say with confidence that the volunteer guest house is by far the best place I have ever stayed in Africa! Even the shower is the best shower I have ever had in Africa! The location is great, Grace (the cook) is brilliant, the guest house dogs are cool, Peter (the caretaker) is by far the coolest caretaker in the world, and Chillie (the Volunteer Coordinator) is always available to help you out with anything you need.

In terms of projects and the work I did, Matt (the Director) was fantastic: he sat down with me at the beginning of my stay and gave me a full orientation and planned my volunteer itinerary. As well as the football coaching I was focusing on, PWA secured me some work as a PE teacher at a rural African school and included me in some projects to assist fellow PWA volunteers delivering health and nutritional workshops. With my experience of working as part of a much smaller charity in Africa that has similar aims to PWA, it was ideal for me to learn from Matt exactly how to run a larger charity on a day-to-day basis. The experience has certainly helped me in ways that will improve the running of my charity.

Something PWA certainly excelled in was making sure us volunteers were happy. This included team nights out, day-trips into Accra, and weekend trips to other parts of Ghana. We had a weekend in the Volta Region with Peter and Chillie and then a weekend at Cape Coast with Matt and Chillie. Both were brilliant weekends and something I'd definitely recommend and will not forget.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with PWA and wasn't very keen on heading back to the UK when my volunteer placement ended. Morally and ethically, I think PWA stand out from other organisations as a charity that potential volunteers should seriously consider. There are a lot of choices for those looking to volunteer in places like Ghana, but I did not find any as good as PWA at really helping those in need in Ghana.

If any potential volunteers would like to speak to me to help them make up their minds about volunteering in Africa with PWA, I'd be happy for you to email me with any questions [contact PWA for my address].

Cheers PWA!"
