Today, I am leaving Ghana after a magical 5 week work placement with Partner West Africa (PWA). I can honestly say that I really do not want to go home as these past weeks have been some of the best of my life. Before I came I knew that I would love it it but I just didn't realise how much!

"Today, I am leaving Ghana after a magical 5 week work placement with Partner West Africa (PWA). I can honestly say that I really do not want to go home as these past weeks have been some of the best of my life. Before I came I knew that I would love it it but I just didn't realise how much!

From the moment I walked out of the airport I felt welcome.  The volunteer guest house is everything you could want and more. It feels like a family home and you are treated as one of the family. The house is light and airy with large rooms to relax in. The garden is large and attractive with lots of trees and tropical flowers. And after a long sticky day it is lovely to get in the shower and wash in lovely [eco-friendly, harvested] rainwater.

The food at PWA is wonderful and I have tried a full range of Ghanaian food prepared by the lovely Mary, the guesthouse cook.  Peter, the guesthouse caretaker, is always on hand to make sure that everything is as it should be in the house. And Chris, PWA's security guard, is around to make sure everything and everyone is safe. They are a wonderful team and they helped make my stay absolutely unforgettable.

Matt the Director ensured that I was kept busy. I spent time in Opeikuma, a community supported by PWA, where I visited one of PWA's partner schools and was treated to a display of cultural dancing by the children. I was also hugged by a traditional African chief! We visited Cape Coast where there is an old slave-trading castle. It was a poignant sight and very moving, thinking of how people treated their fellow human beings in such a cruel and inhumane way. The castle itself however is in a stunning location and there is a bustling fishing village right next to it.

We were also treated to an evening of African music in the volunteer guest house which was just fantastic. The musicians were playing traditional African instruments made by PWA volunteers and it was such fun and a very different experience.

On a couple of occasions I was part of a PWA West Africa team working in the inner city shanty towns in Accra, this was a very moving experience and one which will stay with me for the rest of my life. It is the biggest of its kind in West Africa and the people there have so little but there is no feeling of despair... just the feeling of people getting on with their lives as best they can.

I spent a fair amount of my time working in the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre which is in the PWA compound with the guest house. This was a treat beyond measure! The children are utterly delightful, engaging and very bright. They come from the local village of Oshieye which is extremely poor and relies on fishing for income. These children are vulnerable and the care they receive at PWA is critical for their future well being. They are warm and loving and it doesn't matter that you can't always communicate verbally with the littlest ones as a hug or a held hand is communication enough.

I cannot say enough good things about the work being done by Partner West Africa... it has been one of the best experiences of my life. I will be coming back as soon as I can to try and do my bit for the wonderful and warm people of Ghana!"
