PWA Volunteer Zach with students working on the international schools partnership programme

Zach - UK

Programme Completed: International Schools Partnership Programme

Date Posted: 25/07/2014

As an independent, no-nonsense, transparent NGO, I absolutely loved the get-up-and-go nature of PWA and the fact that there is simply no room for voluntourism in its busy schedule of developmental projects. Like I did, you can request to start your own project, or you can just join in with an existing one.

One thing is certain: if you just want to get stuck in and do your bit, PWA are efficient, ethical, and understand what's happening on the ground. They get things done.

"If I had my way, everybody would spend time volunteering for a cause bigger than themselves. It does wonders for your world view, your confidence, and it can completely change the path your life is on for the better. As a fortunate person, you owe it to yourself and to others to offer your energy and skills to those who can and will benefit from them. So, if you're still on the fence: YES! YOU SHOULD VOLUNTEER!

Partner West Africa (PWA) is absolutely the right place to go. Kokrobite serves as a safe, beautiful, community-driven base for the organisation and I not only felt at home in the guesthouse and in the community, but also like a part of one mahoosive family during my three-month stay. The local food is inimitable (believe me, I tried - and failed) and the atmosphere of the guesthouse is homely, relaxing, and wholly motivating when needs be.

I approached PWA specifically with a view to teaching French in Ghana. Matt, PWA Director, and his team went to incredible lengths to organise everything with the school in the village of Opeikuma, allowing me to focus on lesson planning and transport. In the end, amongst other projects, I taught French for nearly two months and the bonds I formed with the kids and teachers were heartfelt and unforgettable. Imparting knowledge is one of the most rewarding things you can do, but (prepare yourself for the cheese) it's what I learned from my students that I remember better than anything.

Oh yeah, and everything's infinitely better when you immerse yourself in the culture - get your head out of Facebook and into a local market or drumming lesson. "Should I take my computer?" Just no. "Should I bring make up and straighteners?" Forget it.

PWA, you rock.

Zach, inexplicably grateful volunteer

PS: please send me some banku and jollof rice; I am still having withdrawal symptoms!"
