Programme Completed: New - The PWA Daycare & Nursery Centre

My life has changed enormously after staying at the volunteer guest house and volunteering with Partner West Africa. I now have a lot more friends and knowledge regarding the culture of Ghana. I spent most of my time working closely with the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre  team, where I have made friends for life. These brave young women and the incredible Project Manager, Inusah are working very hard towards benefiting the children of Osheyie.

"My life has changed enormously after staying at the volunteer guesthouse and volunteering with Partner West Africa (PWA). I now have a lot more friends and knowledge regarding the culture of Ghana. I spent most of my time working closely with the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre  team, where I have made friends for life. These brave young women and the incredible Project Manager, Inusah are working very hard towards benefiting the children of Oshieye. He cares deeply for all the children of Ghana and always finds time to spend in the nursery. The nursery teachers are willing to learn and try different things and work very long days for the children. Thank you for all your hard work and inviting me to work in the nursery. I have learnt ever so much from you.

The guesthouse was extremely clean, safe and comfortable, enabling me to focus on the work at hand. Thank you Peter, Chris, Mary, Bitey and Koko who work extremely hard towards making it so. I found Peter uplifting and I must express that I hope PWA are helping to develop Peter's future in education, as I believe he has a lot of potential. Chris you're a huge (!) asset to the charity. I believe you are a lot more that security, your soul fills PWA and I cannot wait for your allotment and more involvement in the nursery. Mary, I thank you for feeding me and introducing me to new flavours and dance moves of Ghana! Also for your co-operation with the nursery and staff, it is highly important. The dogs, wise Koko is beautiful and Bitey is super friendly and will always be there for a snuggle/nibble.

My work in the Daycare and Nursery Centre was and will continue to be ongoing, the first week I met and started my initial training with the teachers, however I was unaware of the situation of the nursery and Mama Felicia's retirement, it was difficult to gauge the teachers experience as I was so new to the Ghanaian culture. The second and third weeks were spent on nursery admissions. It was fascinating interviewing parents and visiting the homes of the children and I learnt a lot about the factors obstructing children from receiving education and about the culture. I enjoyed also very much joining the volunteer engineers on outings for meetings with various directors of planning, education and engineering.

In the afternoons I enjoyed walking through Kokrobite and to the beautiful beach, just five minutes walk away. After working very hard in our weekdays, the other volunteers and I spent two weekends on excursions, one to Agbogbloshie (also known as Sodom and Gomorrah) shanty town in Accra then the beautiful, authentic village of Opeikuma, where we stayed at Chris' guesthouse, where we were made to feel extremely welcome.  Our second trip was to the colonial Cape Coast and Kakum National Park. Inusah and Peter became excellent guides and bargain hunters. It was wonderful to see and learn about the European influence on Africa. The National Park was glorious and green.

I am very happy I chose to stay with PWA for my first visit to Ghana; it has acted as a gateway, in expanding my view of the world, meeting incredible people, visiting very contrasting parts of the district and working very hard!"
