As I walked through the gates of the Partner West Africa (PWA) compound in Ghana for the first time in March, I was filled with mixed feelings of scepticism and excitement. Here I was, thousands of miles from home, not knowing what to expect or whether I had made a wise decision. As an international development graduate from the UK, my sole desire for my placement at PWA was to spend as much time as possible working within a serious NGO, in order to expand my knowledge in the development field.

"As I walked through the gates of the Partner West Africa (PWA) compound in Ghana for the first time in March, I was filled with mixed feelings of scepticism and excitement. Here I was, thousands of miles from home, not knowing what to expect or whether I had made a wise decision. As an international development graduate from the UK, my sole desire for my placement at PWA was to spend as much time as possible working within a serious NGO, in order to expand my knowledge in the development field. So, how's that going?

Well, during the last six weeks I have visited numerous PWA partner schools, conducted needs-assessment of local villages, assisted a professional PWA healthcare team conduct a comprehensive health screening programme across 5 communities, spent time caring for vulnerable children and coordinating programmes at PWA's Daycare and Nursery Centre, and genuinely experienced what it is to live and breath NGO work! So, all in all, I'd say I've made quite an excellent choice!

Research programmes I have participated in here have introduced me in to the lives of many of the children and families that PWA supports. I have learnt that each family consisted usually of at least 6-8 members. Having virtually no educational background, most can only procure a meagre income as unskilled labourers. This earning barely provides for basic feeding needs, leaving a multitude of expenses yet to be addressed. This produces a desperate need for family planning skills as well as improved access to education. And PWA helps address these needs. PWA paves the way not only for children but also the youth and women of the localities towards a brighter future.

The most important lesson I have learnt so far? A lack of education is the root of so many problems. Without organisations such as PWA, consisting of selfless individuals, it is often the case that there would be no other opportunity for real change in many of the lives of these vulnerable people. At PWA I've learnt - and still am learning - these valuable lessons regarding humanity. Never have I better understood the old adage 'you can teach a man to fish but.' as well as I do now.

At PWA the personal interaction with the local communities, whether that be with a parent or child, shines out brightly. I think it is that that is the key to the success of PWA. So my placement with PWA has brought me face to face with the realities of life that so many people are exposed to. I am proud to be in a position to use my time with PWA to ease a few difficulties that are confronted by so many. I deeply appreciate the work carried out by the team here, and am excited to help the NGO grow. I hope to be a part of this organisation, that is trying to better shape the future of those who have nothing, for many years to come.

As one poet wisely once wrote:

"I shall pass this way but once, any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again"
