I was impressed with Partner West Africa (PWA) from the first time I visited their website. Being aware of the "darker side" of volunteering - i.e. 'voluntourism' - it was clear that PWA was something different from the start. The team are serious and care deeply about making an impact in the communities they serve, improving the living conditions and quality of life of children in those communities, and giving those children a strong educational foundation to start their lives.

Working in healthcare I had the experience during my volunteer placement of coordinating with the Ghana Health Service to organise and carry out an extensive PWA community health screening programme across five of PWA's partner communities. I came to Ghana having completed medical work as a volunteer abroad with different organisations, and based on my past experiences I assumed that with PWA we would most likely also be lacking in equipment, resources, and funding in general. However, I soon found that not to be the case. We created health packets, and created plans for every child in the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre, we provided assessments and treatment for all those children plus an additional healthcare project for a number of children living in the city's slums, and PWA provided all of the resources we could have possibly needed to finish the job well!

During my work as a volunteer with PWA I was 100% involved in the planning process and felt as if I were a member of the PWA staff and not simply a volunteer. I truly felt as though I was able to perform quality, thorough, and professional work during my stay. This is as PWA is a charity that really cares about children, not just within its own Daycare and nursery centre, but across Ghana and West Africa. For example, our team of volunteers had the opportunity to visit a slum/shanty town in Accra where PWA supports vulnerable children projects. At one of PWA's partner organisations there, we met with a woman running an ad-hoc daycare centre for children as PWA had arranged and resourced for our team to medically assess and treat every child there. PWA staff escorting us on a Saturday, during their own personal time, were more than happy to complete the work. One of PWA's teaching staff arrived very early and prepared hot meals for up to 50 of the children, other PWA staff members came to help translate, organise the crowd, help the mothers of the children fill out information forms, and help feed the children, and our team completed the medical assessments and treatment.

Having been my first visit to Africa, only before experiencing culture in Latin America and Southwest Asia, I found the the culture in Ghana slightly strange at first. It is as if the entire country is a large speaker with its volume turned up high! People, when speaking to each other, always sounded like they were arguing, even the radio talk shows! But after a few days I realised that almost all Ghanaians are fun-loving, happy, stress free people.

If you volunteer with PWA, PWA will definitely use whatever talents or skills you have and put them to really good, meaningful, sustainable use in Ghana.

Thank you PWA!"
