Before I came here I was slightly anxious about what skills I had to offer and if they could be put to good use. I soon came to realise that one of the great things about Partner West Africa (PWA) is that the team will utilize whatever skills you have to benefit the community and structure a programme for you that will get the best out of you. The majority of my work therefore was doing the photography to promote PWA's issues, projects and the people they care for. This meant I was always kept busy not only around the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre but also out in the field, visiting communities the NGO work with and trying to capture the daily struggles local people face, and how PWA help them.

"The past 9 weeks spent with the Partner West Africa (PWA) team in Ghana have been an absolute pleasure, time has flown by and I will be sad to say goodbye. Although I have travelled a lot before, I have never volunteered and so really did not know what to expect. I spent a lot of time researching different organisations as I was so aware of the negative side of volunteering and concerned about where my money was going to go and if in fact it would end up benefiting the people that need it most. When I found PWA's website I was instantly impressed with their ethos, and after communicating with Matt (PWA'S Director) by email and Skype, I felt confident that my time and money would be put to good use.

When I arrived at the guest house I was surprised at how comfortable and well equipped it was, light airy and spacious. With running, showers, electricity, and plenty of comfortable seating to relax after a long day, it far exceeded my expectations!

The PWA team are super friendly and welcoming and I instantly felt at home. Matt, although so busy, was always really cool and helpful from the start, giving me a full orientation of the culture before organising my itinerary for my workload during my stay. He always made time to ensure everyone was happy and confident in the work they were doing. Inusah the project manager was also always on hand to advise me on the day to day stuff and take me to all the projects, it was clear from the start how passionate they are about the work PWA do, and how deeply they care for the children and communities they work with.

The PWA teaching staff are also all incredible, they do such an amazing job taking care of the children in the nursery, but despite their hectic schedule are always so happy to see you everyday and ensure they make time to chat and get you involved in activities.

Peter and Kofi, who look after the guest house for volunteers, are great fun, and always around to help out with anything that needs doing. I really hope Peter achieves his dream of going to University, he is an very intelligent guy, with a kind heart, and I know PWA will do everything they can to provide him with the brightest future.

I was also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get involved in other projects such as helping create partnerships [for the International Schools Partnership Programme] between PWA and a school for children with hearing disabilities as well as being involved in the beginnings of a partnership between a school in Opeikuma (one of the many communities PWA supports) and a corresponding school in the UK. My other responsibilities included a taking Grace and Sarah (children PWA sponsor) to the clinic to get both their eyes tested and Sarah's severe asthma treated. Being involved in these different areas of work have given me a far more rounded experience than I otherwise might have had, I therefore felt my time spent here was both fulfilling and worthwhile.

My free time was spent relaxing in the beautifully serene PWA gardens, playing with the dogs (Beetay I will miss you so!) or walking along Kokrobite beach to craft stalls and the infamous 'Big Milly's'

All in all I have loved every minute of being here, from the people, places, food, and of course the dogs. I honestly can't wait to come back!

Thanks PWA. I LOVE YOU ALL!"
