Ethical volunteering and work placements with vulnerable children in Ghana, West Africa

I came across the Volunteer West Africa volunteer department on the Partner West Africa (PWA) website and quickly it became apparent that PWA was one of very few organisations which ticked all the boxes [with respect to ethical volunteering]. With a clear focus on 'sustainable development', 'community involvement' and 'healthcare and awareness' I knew that I had found the right volunteering organisation...I would recommend volunteering with Partner West Africa to anyone aspiring to use their skills, whatever that may be, for the good of children and communities across West Africa.

"While searching for an organisation to volunteer with, I sought advice from a friend who had worked with an NGO in Malawi for seven months. She advised me to look carefully at the values of the organisation, and the ethics in a 'volunteer holiday' which is what a lot of companies were offering. The one I choose should have only the future of the community in mind and whatever work I would be doing should not be taking an opportunity away from a local community member and therefore reinforcing a poverty problem by contributing to unemployment. After taking this on board and doing considerable research, I came across the Volunteer West Africa volunteer department on the Partner West Africa (PWA) website and quickly it became apparent that they were one of very few organisations which ticked all the boxes. With a clear focus on 'sustainable development', 'community involvement' and 'healthcare and awareness' I knew that I had found the right volunteering organisation.

After a month or so of highly professional email correspondence with a PWA Director, I signed up and booked my flights. The attention and involvement to detail shown by the PWA team gave me the confidence to know I was making the right choice: all my questions (and there were a lot of them!) were answered thoughtfully and promptly. Together we moulded a programme to fit my skills and abilities into the needs of the communities and children PWA supports.

Each placement at PWA, true to their promise, is tailor made by exploring the individual strengths of the volunteer against the needs of the projects, as this is most beneficial to everyone involved and proved to me again that PWA is not churning through volunteers in order simply to secure the person and their money.

I was PWA's first volunteer from New Zealand, so I was put in contact with an Australian volunteer whom confirmed I had made the right choice and helped me with tips to prepare. This was really helpful for me as it confirmed that the NGO was in fact real and transparent (and I wasn't going to be sent to a shed in the middle of the desert... I may have had a dream or two about that!).

Over my six week placement I worked in a range of areas across three different communities. From arts and crafts with the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre's vulnerable children, assisting the formation of partnerships between PWA's partner Ghanaian schools and schools in the UK as part of the International Schools Partnership Programme, and finally organising end of term events for a Ghanaian School for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children. Each and every one of these tasks were rewarding to work on and, as PWA do treat their volunteers with respect and full involvement, knowing I had a hand in decisions as well as witnessing first hand the reaction from the students and community members - knowing real change was being made - made the whole experience so much better.

In summary, I would recommend volunteering with Partner West Africa to anyone aspiring to use their skills, whatever that may be, for the good of children and communities across West Africa. While PWA is still a young NGO I was excited to see all of their achievements, and look forward in the upcoming years to witnessing so many more! I hope to be involved again with Partner West Africa one day!"
