I had the most incredible stay in Kokrobite with the Partner West Africa team and I have been met with constant professionalism, support and friendliness. If you are thinking of volunteering, and particularly if, like me, you have never been to a developing country before - expect the unexpected. My first trip to Africa is certainly the first of many and I will be returning to Ghana to work with Partner West Africa again as soon as I possibly can!

"I had the most incredible stay in Kokrobite with the Partner West Africa (PWA) team and I have been met with constant professionalism, support and friendliness. I had never been to Africa before and so naturally I had some anxieties about what to expect. Arriving at the volunteer guest house after a long flight was amazing. The house is so beautiful and I felt safe and secure at all times.  It is a very large house set in beautiful grounds with space to be on your own and reflect or more communal areas for socialising with other volunteers.

My first week was very busy and I was given the opportunity to visit several schools and meet with teachers, heads of schools and of course the children! Nothing can prepare you for what it's like to first walk into a classroom of little ones and be greeted with huge smiles and cuddles - I'll leave that for you to experience!

Throughout my stay, my focus was to help set up a child sponsorship programme, alongside other volunteers, in Jamestown, Accra.  This was really interesting as I had the opportunity to talk to Ghanaians working directly with the children and to learn about all the difficulties they face providing education. This was such an eye-opener and made me realise the enormity of the problems that many children face in attending school. At times, I found observing and learning about the poverty and lack of opportunity upsetting and challenging but it was always coupled with a profound sense of pride and hope that makes supporting PWA all the more inspiring and rewarding.

If you are thinking of volunteering, and particularly if, like me, you have never been to a developing country before - expect the unexpected.  Don't forget to bring mosquito repellent, bite cream, a few creature comforts (i.e. I brought my own tea bags and biscuits!), lots of books and above all else, a willingness to understand and get involved in an amazing culture.

My first trip to Africa is certainly the first of many and I will be returning to Ghana to work with PWA again as soon as I possibly can!"
