Volunteer work experience in Ghana, West Africa

Dr. Danielle Wain Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Water Quality Engineering - University of Bath, UK

Programme Completed: Multidisciplinary Volunteering Programmes

In August 2015, I visited the Partner West Africa (PWA) compound for one week to work with a team of Engineers Without Borders from the University of Bath who were spending nine weeks in Ghana this summer. I am sorry that my schedule constraints kept me from staying longer in Ghana. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a continued partnership between PWA and the Bath EWB group and that I will have the opportunity to visit again in the future for a longer period to really see the critical work that PWA is doing for the children in the local communities.

"In August 2015, I visited the Partner West Africa (PWA) compound for one week to work with a team of Engineers Without Borders, who have formed an official Member Led Partnership between Engineers Without Borders and PWA, students from the University of Bath who were spending nine weeks in Ghana this summer. The team of three students are working with PWA to develop a rainwater harvesting design for the PWA buildings to minimise the amount of water that needs to be trucked in. The students were also assessing potential water solutions for another community in which PWA works.

The student team is being very well supported in their work by the PWA staff. During my visit, the staff arranged meetings with various key people who are also working with rainwater harvesting so that the students could learn from their experiences. PWA has also ensured that the student team is setting realistic goals and keeping them accountable to meeting these goals.

The students seem to be enthusiastically embracing their task and living in Ghana for the summer. This is certainly assisted by the warm and friendly Ghanaian staff at PWA. In addition to the friendly conversation, they also ensure that the compound is a safe and clean oasis for us all to return to at the end of a long day of visiting field sites and evaluating potential rainwater harvesting solutions.

I am sorry that my schedule constraints kept me from staying longer in Ghana. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a continued partnership between PWA and the Bath EWB group and that I will have the opportunity to visit again in the future for a longer period to really see the critical work that PWA is doing for the children in the local communities."
