Programme Completed: Multidisciplinary Volunteering Programmes

It has been a pleasure and a fantastic opportunity to spend the past 8 weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa in the local community of Oshieye and Kokrobite. As part of the Engineers Without Borders team, my project of looking at rainwater harvesting was quite different to the programmes PWA typically offers, but we still received an incredible amount of tailored and dedicated support from the team. This was my first experience volunteering abroad with an NGO, and I feel lucky that the organisation we chose does such great work for the community and truly values the skills you can offer.

"It has been a pleasure and a fantastic opportunity to spend the past 8 weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa [through their internal volunteering department: Volunteer West Africa] in the local community of Oshieye and Kokrobite. As part of the Engineers Without Borders team, my project of looking at rainwater harvesting was quite different to the programmes PWA typically offers, but we still received an incredible amount of tailored and dedicated support from the team (especially from Inusah, Project Manager, thank you!). Meetings with key stakeholders and important contacts had all been arranged within the first week, and this really helped to kick-start our work!

Although our project was not directly involved in the day-to-day activities of the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre for vulnerable children, I was always given the opportunity to spend any spare time helping out with the children. From this, it was evident that the work and support PWA provides is seriously benefiting the children of the local community, who always seem to be smiling and have endless amounts of energy! The group of nursery teachers are always so enthusiastic and really friendly, with one of them either singing, dancing or laughing at any given point in time.

The accommodation itself was much better than I expected, with running showers, electricity and a fantastic staff. Kofi (Caretaker) and Regina (Cook) were really helpful and would always go out of their way if I had a question/problem. It provided a really nice, comfortable and relaxing place to come back to after a long day of work!

At its peak, there were 10 volunteers at the compound and this resulted in a great social scene aside from the volunteering work itself. Highlights included a weekend excursion to the city of Cape Coast, where we got to visit the Elmina slave castle and walk through a tree-top canopy (40m high!) at Kakum National Park. As well as this, on spare afternoons or weekends we'd visit the beach at Kokrobite and the local bar for a drink, where there was usually a group playing traditional African music. The craft and general markets of Accra were (relatively) easily accessible via tro-tro and this is where you could get all the souvenirs and fabrics you could need.

The visit that stood out most to me was visiting Agbogbloshie, Accra's largest electrical waste dump and shanty town. It was really eye-opening to see the conditions that the people have to live and work in, and to witness the amazing work PWA's partner Amina does looking after 40+ children in a single room whilst their parents are at work.

This was my first experience volunteering abroad with an NGO, and I feel lucky that the organisation we chose does such great work for the community and truly values the skills you can offer. I'm looking forward to continuing and further developing the partnership between Engineers without Borders and PWA next year.

Thank you to PWA and all the staff!

Jake"
