PWA Volunteer Juliet working with vulnerable children in Ghana, West Africa

Juliet - Netherlands

Programme Completed: New - The PWA Daycare & Nursery Centre

Date Posted: 30/04/2016

Hi, I'm Juliet from the Netherlands. I've just finished 8 weeks of working with Partner West Africa. It was my first experience as a volunteer and the first time in Africa. I helped at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre. The most important lesson I've learned is that you should be happy with the things you have got. These children don't even have a mattress to sleep on at home and live with their whole, usually large, families in one room. and yet they are still smiling the whole day!

"Hi, I'm Juliet from the Netherlands.

I've just finished 8 weeks of working with Partner West Africa [through their internal volunteering department: Volunteer West Africa]. It was my first experience as a volunteer and the first time in Africa. I arrived in the late evening. I was really happy when I saw the PWA sign between all those people at the airport.

When we arrived at the volunteer guest house the other volunteers were so welcoming and lovely. It took me four days to get used to everything in and around the house. Not flushing toilet paper (as Ghana has no sewage system!), always keeping you door closed against mosquitos, and the quickest showers ever (to save precious water!).

My first day I was a bit nervous but it all disappeared when I walked out the door and all the children at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre ran to me hugging and smiling.  they really stole my heart from the first minute. When I first came it wasn't totally clear what project I was going to do due to my late application. So at the orientation we decided that I was going to help 'Little Lizzy' (one of the PWA nursery teaching staff) in the creche class, the smallest kids from the school, 28 kids (of 2-3 years).

My first day I felt a bit insecure and I didn't know what to do. Luckily all the teachers where so nice and willing to help me. I've learned so much from them and I was glad to hear at the end that I've been helpful. The thing I loved the most about the little kids was that they were so happy and smiling. Changing diapers is a piece of cake after 5 diapers a day!

My last two weeks Connie (the teacher of Kindergarten 1 class) was sick. So Danique (another volunteer) and I took over that nursery class: a big challenge but it turned out as my best weeks ever! I'll miss every little bit of those little kids.

Aside from the teaching Danique and I worked on the student's file. A little story of every child so new volunteers can read and get to know the kids better before they start their own work. We also worked on social media projects on Twitter and Instagram to share our experiences worldwide.

The most important lesson I've learned is that you should be happy with the things you have got. These children don't even have a mattress to sleep on at home and live with their whole, usually large, families in one room. and yet they are still smiling the whole day!"
