Not your typical volunteer, I decided to come to Ghana at a time of life that most people have decided to retire. I am so glad that I chose Partner West Africa, almost by accident I stumbled across a charity that values its volunteers equally with the work that they do.

I will leave Ghana all the richer for this experience and I have nothing but admiration for PWA's team and the work that they do.

"Not your typical volunteer, I decided to come to Ghana at a time of life that most people have decided to retire.

I am so glad that I chose Partner West Africa (PWA), almost by accident I stumbled across a charity that values its volunteers equally with the work that they do...

The volunteer guest house and compound is very safe, not only from crime but also from the snakes and scorpions that live in the brush nearby. Every care has been taken to ensure the best experience for the volunteers. The guest house accommodation is not only clean, safe and well maintained but spacious too!

During my time volunteering at PWA [through their internal volunteering department: Volunteer West Africa] I have seen first-hand the dower conditions that many Ghanaians sadly live in, home is often one room with one mattress for the whole family to sleep on, while water needs to be collected from wells and carried some distance, and most families PWA work with share one toilet with many other families.

The daily schedule for the families PWA supports revolves around earning enough money to provide food for the family, starting at dawn (4am) and bed by dusk (7pm). Ghanaians use everything that they have and everything that they are given to improve their living conditions, but usually there is only money for food, so life is hand to mouth.

However, during my time here, I have been moved by the sense of unity within the family and the community, everybody looks out for each other, and there is always a "Welcome to Ghana" or "Hello how are you" with a smile where ever you go.

The vital work that this young charity undertakes should not be underestimated:

The PWA Volunteer West Africa Daycare & Nursery Centre provides free schooling to 70 of the most vulnerable children from the local traditional fishing village of Oshieye, providing each child not just with education and healthcare but importantly also a nutritious feeding programme, food the children will almost certainly have gone without at home.

In Agbogbloshie - a vast shanty town perched on a rubbish dump in the capital city, Accra - PWA are working with an elderly child minder trying to improve her living conditions, the daily care she provides for up to 50 children, in order that those children's parents can work to earn income each day.

In the next few months, PWA are also planning a health screening program that will cover local villages to help prevent and treat Malaria, one of West Africa's most prolific killers.

I will leave Ghana all the richer for this experience and I have nothing but admiration for PWA's team and the work that they do.

Long may it continue!"
