Hello, I'm Ebun, and have just finished 3 weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa. This volunteer experience has been very beneficial to me as it has given me additional practical experience alongside the experience provided during my social work training course. I believe the experience will enhance my employment opportunities as it has enabled me to develop my social work values such as anti-oppression practice and diversity as I was working within a different cultural setting with limited resources and infrastructure.

"Hello, I'm Ebun, and have just finished 3 weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa (PWA) [through their internal volunteering department: Volunteer West Africa].

On Arrival I was picked up by Inusah, he was very easy to find and we hopped aboard the Land Rover (known as Lilly) and travelled to the volunteer guest house. I was very warmly welcomed by the PWA staff and all the other volunteers. Shortly after I was given a tour of the volunteer guest house and told a few of the ground rules, I was given some time and privacy to freshen up and relax after my long journey. Over the following 2 days I completed my health and safety orientation as well as a detailed tour of the local area which made me feel very confident and safe within the local community and within Accra. We visited the local hospital, clinic, police station, shopping centre, bank and beach bar. In the evening we also visited the local beach bar for an entertaining cultural night event.

During my stay with PWA I had the pleasure of meeting many other volunteers and shared a room with four other ladies. Sharing a house with volunteers and staff was an unforgettable experience which I enjoyed beyond my expectations!

The volunteer guesthouse is a very comfortable environment with various activities in the surrounding area. The PWA team are also very flexible and supportive, they respect that each individual has a different project to focus on with different tasks which can take place at different times of the day. There is always a member of staff available to answer any questions or queries and to help plan your day. Occasionally when we were feeling overwhelmed by the heat and workload, we would take a stroll along the beach to the local bar for a cool drink. There were activities planned during my stay such as the tour around Accra, a weekend at Cape Coast and visit to Agbogbloshie (a vast shanty town)

During my 3 week stay, I worked with the pleasant children and teachers at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre. I completed my project orientation and took part in all the team meetings. My project at PWA involved developing the child review templates and child care plans, for the children at the nursery, as well as completing child reviews within the community. This was an amazing experience for me as it challenged my communication and social work skills. I was supported by Peter (a PWA staff member) who translated and supported while completing the review forms with parents. We spent hours in the sun visiting the family and homes of the children who attend the centre.

The children who attend the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre come from the local community of Oshieye, which is an underprivileged, traditional fishing community. I was able to observe first hand and discuss the social and economical issues which the community faces as well as observe the many benefits that PWA's work delivers within this community.

As a newly qualified social worker I wanted to challenge myself by using my new skills in a developing country, I believe I was able to achieve my aim while volunteering with PWA.

This volunteer experience has also been beneficial on a personal level as I had the pleasure of living in a developing country and learning different life skills such as learning to save water, learning a different language, eating different foods and taking the cheap and cheerful tro-tro (public bus) transport system. This experience made me value the lifestyle which I enjoy in the UK and also understand the difficulty of living here in a developing country. Despite the challenges Ghanaians face, they are the most welcoming, helpful and happy African people I have met.

I enjoyed my stay at PWA and I am very thankful to them for making my experience in Ghana very pleasurable and beneficial on a personal and professional level!

Thank you - Ebun"
