Programme Completed: New - The PWA Daycare & Nursery Centre

Date Posted: 18/08/2016

Throughout our trip, we did lots of new and exciting things and met some great people along the way. Our project work focused on giving the children at the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre an opportunity to engage in sports activities, as this is something that is new for the centre's curriculum development.

I have had a very humbling experience and have felt very safe staying with PWA and there is nothing I would change about my experience and would definitely recommend PWA to anyone else interested in volunteering!

"Coming and volunteering in an underdeveloped country is something that has always interested me which led to myself and my friend, Lois, coming to Ghana for 3 weeks of the summer holiday to experience not only the culture but also the great work the Partner West Africa (PWA) team does for the local community, Oshieye.

It has not been your normal 'summer holiday' but it's a trip I will always remember with amazing memories that have been created with the help of the welcoming community and the other volunteers and staff. From the first 10 minutes of being in Ghana, Lois and I felt more than welcome as we landed in the airport to see a man singing a song on his piano, greeting us and welcoming us into the country.

Over the 3 weeks we put together a programme which can be used by the teachers and it explains all the various activities they can do with the equipment we brought. For example, different obstacle courses they may wish to play on 'beach Friday', an event that takes place for the children on the last Friday of every month. We all took the children to Kokrobite beach where they had lots of fun playing with the parachute, doing an obstacle course and also other races and games. We also put together a video to eventually be used for the nursery website page which is a light hearted overview of the nursery and how PWA runs and supports it.

Aside from our project we also did lots of fun things such as going to Cape Coast where we visited Cape Coast Castle and learnt about the history of the slave trade there. We also went to Kakum National Park where we did a canopy walk high up in the trees of the rainforest. However, the highlight of my trip there was definitely showering outside in the sun under the palm trees at our resort!

We also spent time at the local beach bar Big Milly's where we made lots of friends, ate nice food and listened to live music at the weekends.

Overall I have had a very humbling experience and have felt very safe staying with PWA and there is nothing I would change about my experience and would definitely recommend PWA to anyone else interested in volunteering!

All my thanks and love,

Jess"
