Programme Completed: Malaria Prevention Programme (MPP)

Date Posted: 02/10/2016
During my two weeks of volunteer placement with Partner West Africa I worked on the Malaria Prevention Programme. We ran community malaria screenings in partnership with the Ghana Health Service which involved testing people who displayed symptoms of malaria and providing free medication to those who tested positive; it was such an experience and so different from home.
"During my two weeks of volunteer placement with Partner West Africa (PWA) [through their internal volunteering department Volunteer West Africa] I worked on the Malaria Prevention Programme. We were able to use the donations I collected from friends and family before I arrived to conduct two malaria screenings in two communities, allowing the funds set aside by PWA to be reallocated to the 2017 Malaria Prevention Programme. The screenings were run in partnership with the Ghana Health Service and involved testing people who displayed symptoms of malaria and providing free medication to those who tested positive; it was such an experience and so different from home. A lot of people showed up for the screening and a lot of people needed to be tested.

The first malaria screening was done under some trees on small tables in the middle of the local village of Oshieye, an under privileged fishing community close to where PWA is based and the children who attend the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre for Vulnerable Children live. The screening seemed a little bit chaotic at first but was fun to do. From the people we tested for malaria about 40% were positive, most of them were children. It made me sad sometimes, but on the other hand I was glad we could treat them for free with the medicines we bought.

What always will stick with me is how positive the people are. The living conditions are so different to we are used to and still everyone is smiling and waving at you. The Ghanaians are so friendly and helpful, there is music everywhere and people are dancing in the middle of the streets.

The PWA volunteer guesthouse where all volunteers were staying was pretty big, it took some days for me to adapt: not flushing the toilet every single time, taking short and cold showers to save water. During my placement there were a lot of volunteers working on several projects, which was cosy but because there were always people around, I needed some alone time every day just to relax and process things. A lovely place for me to relax with a nice cup of coffee was West Hills Shopping Mall, it's easy to get there and it's safe, even if you want to go alone.

I will never forget my time in Ghana and I met some amazing people. This experience made me think more about the basic things in life and appreciate everything at home even more."
