Programme Completed: Malaria Prevention Programme (MPP)

Date Posted: 20/02/2017

Overall I’ve really enjoyed my time in Ghana. It’s always nice experiencing a new culture and meeting local people as well as volunteers from the rest of the world. The staff and other volunteers made me feel welcome straight away and pretty quickly I was going down to the bar to watch the football and jumping in tro-tros on my own.

My work has been on the Malaria Prevention Programme, I joined after all of the malaria screenings had been completed and so helped with the net distribution phase of the programme. I took part in community educational workshops with the parents of children in the PWA Nursery and Daycare Centre for Vulnerable Children and handed out as well as put up mosquito nets in their houses. Getting such a close view of the under developed fishing village of Oshieye where the children live, and seeing inside many of the houses was a great experience. One of the frustrating things was the lack of cooperation from some of the parents, each giving us endless new dates that they would have their nets up by until eventually we just came and put them up to stop us having to go back a 6th or 7th time. I probably got to know some of the parents better than I knew their children in the nursery! Eventually we did get nearly all of the nets up after a few weeks which was satisfying; it will be interesting to see whether they are still up in a few of months’ time for the rainy season when the malaria carrying mosquitoes are in their biggest numbers…[I would] recommend VWA to people new to volunteering who would like to do more teaching related projects as the house and staff are really nice and the school is right in the back garden.
