My three weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa have been amazing and I wish it wasn’t over so soon! I can’t recommend PWA enough to anyone looking for a volunteering opportunity that’s ethically sound and tailored to your individual strengths.

My three weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa have been amazing and I wish it wasn’t over so soon! I can’t recommend PWA enough to anyone looking for a volunteering opportunity that’s ethically sound and tailored to your individual strengths. Through my work I’ve gained new skills, met loads of interesting people, and fallen in love with Ghana. I stumbled across PWA whilst researching volunteering opportunities in my final year of university. Their stance on ethical volunteering and the dangers of ‘voluntourism’ was a breath of fresh air amongst the dozens of opportunities I’d looked at before.

The work I did involved holding oral hygiene workshops and helping with International Schools Partnership Programme work at two schools. It was great fun and really interesting and fulfilling. The highlight was being able to communicate (although not particularly well!) with the students at House of Grace [a school for deaf and hearing impaired children] after they gave me a lesson in sign language. Throughout my time I learnt to be more flexible and understanding, to see the funny side when things don’t go as planned, and embrace the different opportunities that arise as a result!

Overall, I couldn’t have hoped for more from my time. Before I came I was terrified. I’d never been outside of the UK for that long before, I didn’t know what to expect from the work, the guest house, or Ghana in general. Knowing what I know now, I wish I had arranged to come for longer. I’ve done some amazing work, met great friends, and lived in a beautiful and friendly country. I can’t wait to come back!
