I came to Ghana unsure what to expect and scared whether I would like it or not, but I have had the most amazing two months of my life and wouldn’t change anything.

I came to Ghana unsure what to expect and scared whether I would like it or not, but I have had the most amazing two months of my life and wouldn’t change anything. I thought two months would be plenty of time here but my time has flown by. My time with Partner West Africa (PWA) has given me the opportunity to gain so many new skills, as well as enhancing my confidence and self-esteem. I chose PWA as the projects are 100% ethical, as well as being tailored to the skills and needs of the volunteer, so I was able to get everything I wanted from my experience and more. During my time here, I have been involved in health promotion work in House of Grace, a school which caters for deaf and hearing impaired children and St Peters high school [a large government school in a rural village location]. It was incredible to work with these children and to have the opportunity to learn sign language, an experience I will never forget. I have also been involved in school partnership work, nutrition, clinic shadowing and the malaria prevention programme. Being involved in the malaria program was incredible as I was able to help so many people. During the program I was involved in mobilising the community, taking vitals (temperature and weight), registering patients and observing the nurses during testing and consultation. The malaria work and shadowing in the clinic has helped enhance my aspirations to become a child nurse by giving me a real insight into the work the nurses do and though interacting with the patients.

It took a while for me to adapt to Ghana life as at home I am always on the go, but here things are very laid back and run very slowly. I have adapted to the slower pace of life and as people call it ‘Ghana time’, and made the most of every situation as it’s all part of the experience. I have met so many incredible people and really immersed myself into the culture. The locals are so friendly and welcoming and have taught me so much. I will never take anything in life for granted anymore and will return home with a whole new outlook on life.  I will never forget the memories I have made here and Ghana will always have a special place in my heart. I know for sure that one day I will be back to visit. I definitely recommend PWA to anyone looking to make a difference in Ghana as you know your money is going to the right place and you will have the most amazing experience of your life.
