I spent just over 3 weeks working with PWA on the malaria prevention programme. There were three main stages of my time here: the first consisted of the preparation for the event which ranged from team meetings with local community leaders to organising the logistics of the day. [The second stage was the screening events themselves]. For the two screening programmes, there were numerous roles which could be undertaken. A highlight of the screening involved community mobilisation which was a fantastic opportunity to encourage the local community to attend the event. The last stage was the evaluation and write up, as well as exploring recommendations and developing a protocol for further screening programmes. In addition to the malaria work, I had the opportunity to explore the facilities of a local hospital and the supportive local community work taking place in the appalling environment of Agbogbloshie, one of the largest technology waste disposal sites in the world.

There were many valuable lessons to be learnt throughout my time with PWA: in particular the importance of working in partnership with the local community to provide projects that are tailored to benefit them in the most culturally appropriate way. A high degree of flexibility was needed, with unexpected issues arising in all aspects of the screening programme. The high level of community engagement allowed me to explore the challenges facing those most impoverished in the locality, which will of no doubt help me in my forthcoming Global Health studies.

Ghana is an exciting country to discover, where you will always be greeted with warmth. The PWA compound, located a 5 minute walk from the lively town of Kokrobite,  is a safe comfortable environment, with plenty of delicious local meals to try. The PWA team can help to tailor your programme to include any areas of expertise or interest, to result in the most valuable placement for your time here.
