Cultural exchange trips for schools, colleges, youth groups and more

Yas - UK

Programme Completed: Multidisciplinary Volunteering Programmes

Date Posted: 25/10/2017

When I first got here [Ghana] and before we went out for the first time I was nervous about being white in a small community but when we went out everyone was so welcoming and wanted to greet us and say hello. It was amazing to see such a close community and how they would help out others in time of need.

Yas volunteered with Partner West Africa (PWA) on a cultural exchange trip in partnership with the ‘Pioneer’s Project’ in the UK. The focus of group trips for young people are different to PWA’s individual volunteer opportunities; while the trip is still tailored to the groups individual needs and skills, the overarching aim is to give young people a first-hand experience of life in a country different to their own, helping to unpick prejudice, break down cultural barriers, promote understanding and empathy, and to encourage young people to become responsible global citizens.

"When I first got here [Ghana] and before we went out for the first time I was nervous about being white in a small community but when we went out everyone was so welcoming and wanted to greet us and say hello. It was amazing to see such a close community and how they would help out others in time of need. The beach in Kokrobite is beautiful and so natural, you wouldn’t want to leave, but the heat takes control of that unfortunately.

In Ghana the culture is pretty different to back home but I couldn’t fault any of it except the men approaching women like they do, it’s flattering but also very overwhelming for people who get uncomfortable easily.

I think the activities were awesome, going to the schools was such a great experience and a massive eye opener. The other activities were awesome and once in a lifetime opportunities.

The guesthouse was amazing, better than I expected and one of the best buildings in the area. It’s clean, well-kept and cool inside. The beds are covered with a mosquito net and all the house is treated with repellent. They also have a beautiful garden to relax in and socialise. All the staff were equally as nice to be around and made the experience one to remember.

There isn’t much that could be improved as it was totally amazing …I cannot fault my overall experience because it was more than enough to make me see how lucky we are and a big reality to how a large portion of the world live. I would recommend the trip to anyone and couldn’t express how much I really enjoyed myself. I would definitely come back in a heartbeat!"
