Cultural exchange trips for schools, colleges, youth groups and more

The activities we have been able to do whilst being here have been amazing. Going to Agbogbloshie [a vast shanty town in the capital Accra] and to be able to see the area the slaves were kept in [at Cape Coast Castle] were a true experience.

Pat volunteered with Partner West Africa (PWA) on a cultural exchange trip in partnership with the ‘Pioneer’s Project’ in the UK. The focus of group trips for young people are different to PWA’s individual volunteer opportunities; while the trip is still tailored to the groups individual needs and skills, the overarching aim is to give young people a first-hand experience of life in a country different to their own, helping to unpick prejudice, break down cultural barriers, promote understanding and empathy, and to encourage young people to become responsible global citizens.

"From the beginning I noticed the locals were very friendly, coming towards the end I’ve noticed it’s very sexually orientated and they are more interested in the females of the group. I have enjoyed getting involved in the culture, especially in trying new foods from Ghana that I would never have tried before. Another part I extremely enjoyed was the involvement we were able to have with the local people, being able to have a true insight into the people’s lives and living conditions has really made this trip for me.

The activities we have been able to do whilst being here have been amazing. Going to Agbogbloshie [a vast shanty town in the capital Accra] and to be able to see the area the slaves were kept in [at Cape Coast Castle] were a true experience. The PWA team have been very friendly and inviting and seem genuinely interested in their involvement in the activities.

Ghana as a whole I did struggle with the heat and to keep on top of staying hydrated but after a few days it just became routine."
