Spending this time in Ghana was an amazing experience and made me once again realize that all the “problems” I am facing are so relative.

I have spent 5 weeks volunteering with Partner West Africa and been originally assigned to work on the reopening of the PWA Daycare and Nursery Centre but changed to the Gender project [due to changing project timeframes]. The work was a mix of desk research, visiting other organisations & NGO’s and community work. The latter was a really good way of getting to know the culture and the people.

The most unforgettable moment for me was the afternoon that we spent with the children in Oshieye. Seeing how happy they are and the big smiles they give back for every cuddle and bit of attention was heart breaking but also amazing, I wish we could have had more time to have afternoons like this.

Kokrobite [the village near to the PWA volunteer guesthouse] offers a very relaxed, friendly environment with a lot of hardworking and strong women, there has not been any moment where I haven’t felt safe and the beach offers some refreshment during lunch breaks and after work. Little snacks and drinks can be bought in the village, however proper shopping needs to be done a bit further outside at the mall, a 20 minute trotro [public transport shared minibus] ride away. I didn’t expect the volunteer accommodation to be as nice and clean as it was. Considering the strict budget for food Naa, the cook, made delicious Ghanaian dishes.

On one weekend the other volunteers and I visited Cape Coast. It’s a three hour drive from Kokrobite and absolutely worth going. Besides it being near a nice, clean beach you also can visit one of the slave castles and learn about Ghanaian history.

Spending this time in Ghana was an amazing experience and made me once again realize that all the “problems” I am facing are so relative.
