Anais - Australia

Programme Completed: New - Female Health & Gender Equality

Date Posted: 25/05/2018

The work I did was varied, interesting and fulfilling and I would recommend anyone to come and volunteer with PWA!

I am Anais, a 23 year old Australian who volunteered with Partner West Africa (PWA) for 8 weeks working on the Gender Programme. The project I was working on was in the initial research phase so I was involved in contacting local NGOs and meeting them to see what work they are doing and how we can collaborate, as well as writing a community questionnaire and interviewing over 200 people in the local communities surrounding us (Bortianor, Kokrobite, Tuba, Langma and Oshieye) to see what the main gender issues were and how we can implement projects to tackle these in the future.

PWA also encourages a good work/life balance with regards to the volunteer work and they are quite flexible if you want to take your work down to the beach or somewhere else for a change of scenery. PWA is a great place to stay because they do everything they can to make you feel safe and secure. The guesthouse is also really nice and spacious and you can expect great Ghanaian food for dinner from our beautiful cook, Naa!

I had no idea what to expect coming to Ghana but it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. One of my favourite parts of the Ghanaian culture is how welcoming and kind people are when they first meet you and how they always invite you to eat with them! Something else typical of Ghanaian life is the slow pace of things. You will eventually get used to everything taking a while to be completed but that is the Ghanaian way of life!

The work I did was varied, interesting and fulfilling and I would recommend anyone to come and volunteer with PWA!
